Found Treasure

Monday, March 3rd, 2014

I store my photos on an external hard-drive and am pretty terrible about sorting through them. Very few get deleted, and now I have too many and the task is overwhelming. This morning I was making an attempt to organize and came across this from last August. I remember now while looking through the photos that I had just a few leftovers from a wedding (the Queen Anne’s Lace and Physocarpus), but everything else came from the garden. Those are the days I’m ready for. Dirt under your fingernails, sun on your back, creating just for yourself. A photo like this is a small treasure on a damp, grey day like today.

A few from last weekend…

Friday, February 28th, 2014

We lost our last bit of February light before I had a chance to grab my camera, but I sort of like the moody feel of these few photos I was able to capture. I had never worked with the photographer before, but she was shooting away, so I’m hoping I’ll have better professional shots to share with you later.

A single frame by Bryce Covey of a bouquet from last fall. I’m getting really excited for all the bouquets we’ll get to create this year. I don’t have a favorite color palette as each season brings its own exciting flowers and ingredients and with each bouquet I think, “But really this one might be my new favorite…” Sometimes wild and cascading, other times simple and small; I think I just fall in love with the flowers I’ve been waiting 12 months to work with again.

Amy & Justin: Sneak Peek

Tuesday, February 4th, 2014

The ladies of Belathee Photography are masters of their craft and incredibly talented artists. Whenever I receive photos from a project we’ve worked on together, I’m always blown away. I study their work, try to soak it in, and I still don’t know how they do it. This small sample collage is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come from Amy & Justin’s beautiful Corson Building wedding. I can’t wait to share more.McKenzie Powell Floral & Event Design | Belathee PhotographyMcKenzie Powell Floral & Event Design | Belathee Photography

Blush Bridal Bouquet

Monday, January 27th, 2014

Aww blush, the ever popular bridal color… Although I occasionally complain about it  (and I suppose I’m admitting I do), it really is so pretty. And when paired with interesting accents, can make even more of an impact. Set against a dark background (like this rich smokey blue velvet), the soft palette draws you in, while the contrast adds a layer of sophistication. I can handle blush done this way. Yes, and other ways too. But especially this way.

And since we’re in a blushing mood, how about a sweet floral hair wreath? Featured in the latest issue of Seattle Metropolitan Bride & Groom… Click here to see.

A colorful Indian American Wedding

Friday, January 17th, 2014

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve likely already seen these zingy florals and our gorgeous bride Monica. But wow–when I downloaded the photos from my camera last night, I actually had to desaturate them a bit. The color was electric. Just what I needed on this dreary January day. Of course I wish I could have waited until the tables were in position and the chairs were set before whipping out the camera, but the light doesn’t hang around for florists attempting to be photographers. So you make do.

a winter wedding

Monday, December 9th, 2013

This romantic winter wedding captured beautifully by Belathee Photography was featured in Seattle Metropolitan Bride & Groom a while back and got a quick Instagram mention but never its proper due. So let me share a few here now. (More from this wedding on our website.)

I hope you’re all having a good December!

Back in May…

Sunday, November 17th, 2013

We created 64 feet of bold, colorful florals in a color palette that mimicked the blown glass installation overhead. Ghost chairs and a seafoam colored linen helped mirror the environment and sky beyond, and the combination of flowers tied everything together so well. It’s a bit of a treat for us Washingtonian florists to get our hands on kumquats on the branch, and I was quite happy it all worked out for this special dinner. While I don’t think I’ll ever tire of white cattleya orchids, this time I was particularly blown away by how perfect and robust our ranunculus were–and in that palette! Admittedly, not a typical one for us, but no artist likes to get too stuck in their ways and on this grey fall day especially, I’ll gladly reminisce.
